I love Hip-hop music. Over the years I’ve gained a lot from
Hip-hop. It has taught me. It has inspired me. It has led me to incredible experiences and meaningful relationships. Music captured my young mind and heart with its intoxicating breakbeats and engaging bass-lines. More than the Hip-hop itself it has opened my soul to an ever expanding musical universe. Hip-hop samples any and everything. The most influential Hip-hop album of my life is '3 Feet High & Rising' by De La Soul. That album was more than music. It was an experience: a journey through music, skit, and randomness. It all worked so well. De La Soul & Prince Paul created a masterpiece of an album with that project. They looped up a super dope song from a group called Cymande. This is all googleable at this point so I’m not trying to uncover hidden sample secrets or anything. However, I did discover this sample on my own. I bought a used album from a second hand music store. I had heard the name, Cymande, before but I couldn’t put my finger on it. It was $1 though so I had to scoop it up. I put it on and the second song on the album was that De La Soul sample! Or should I say, it was the sample of music that De La Soul used. That one short loop led me to dig deep into this Cymande album and oh my goodness! Incredible sample opportunities were everywhere! So, I got to work. The result is this newest edition of 'BEATS WITHOUT HOMES Vol 12: Tilly’s Headcrack.' Why the name Tilly’s Headcrack? Listen to that song and see if you can figure it out.
